Jay McInerney wrote on Monday in the Wall Street Journal regarding an odious new bill (A06884) that would forbid restaurants and retailers in New York State from buying wines at auction. Apparently, they would have to go through wholesalers in the future, who of course would mark up the wines, increasing costs for no known reason.
The bill is supposedly to save people from purchasing counterfeit wines, something that nearly no one has to worry about but in reality just further consolidates the New York wine market. Why the rush to legislate? McInerney believes it's all about the money. If you're into such things, you can read the bill here.
