To Arrack and Back Again

Batavia Arrack was a fashionable choice for NYC mixologists not too long ago but we never seemed to find a great drink using this somewhat obscure, not exactly-rum-like Indonesian spirit. The other night we stumbled across a good one though at Anfora (34 8th Avenue), where we've enjoyed some of their cocktails like the Nutty Old Fashioned (fino sherry and rye) in the past.

Right now, they are serving Arrack in a nicely made cocktail called Ashes to Arrack, a mix of Buffalo Trace, Batavia Arrack, housemade grenadine, charred carpano orange and lemon. This is a semi-sweet, rich drink served on the rocks. The texture is a bit coarse but the drink goes down very nicely. Definitely recommended.
